PULSE & PRAISE

At Carter Hears!, everything we do is driven by heart—and this is where you’ll feel it. Pulse & Praise is a celebration of the voices, victories, and values that make our team and community so special. Here, you’ll find stories from the field, heartfelt testimonials, recent awards, media features, and published work that reflect our commitment to connection, compassion, and innovation. You can also explore current job opportunities and learn more about what it means to be part of a team that leads with purpose. This is where our impact comes to life—through the words of those we serve, the achievements we’re proud of, and the team who makes it all possible.

TESTIMONIALS

We believe the most powerful reflections of our work come from those we serve. In this section, students, families, educators, and district partners share their experiences and the difference Carter Hears! has made in their lives.

“I would not trust my child to another educational organization. CH! Is committed to the child and that child’s potential, not “de-minimis,” that many school districts pass off as education. My child was fortunate to have worked with so many dedicated people who understand how deaf and hard of hearing children learn and the all-encompassing needs that are a part of that."

PULSE REPORT

This year marks an important milestone for Carter Hears!, the release of our first-ever annual

Pulse Report.

The 2025 Pulse Report captures the heart of our work by bringing together meaningful data, student outcomes, family experiences, and district feedback to tell the story of our impact. It offers a comprehensive snapshot of how our team supported Deaf and Hard of Hearing students across North Carolina, South Carolina, and beyond, while highlighting both measurable progress and the human moments that made it possible.

From service hours and miles traveled to student growth, partnerships, and community engagement, this inaugural report reflects our commitment to equity, access, and excellence in Deaf Education, and sets the foundation for the years ahead.

Team Member Q&A

Q - What’s your favorite part of working at Carter Hears!?
A -
My favorite part of working at Carter Hears is the collaborative environment. I’m so grateful to work on a team that values the work we do and I think it shows in every aspect of our work!

Q - What’s one fun fact about you that might surprise people?
A -
Every year for my birthday my dad and I go skydiving! It’s my favorite crazy tradition. Two years ago we even got matching tattoos of skydivers on our ankles.

Q - If you weren’t working in the DHH field, what career could you see yourself in?
A -
If I wasn’t an interpreter, I think I would be a full time  author. I love to read, write and create!

Q - What’s something you’ve learned from a student or family that has stuck with you?
A -
One thing I’ve learned from the past few years from the people around me is to view every experience as a learning experience. Learn from successes, mistakes, and detours.

Q - How do you recharge after a long or challenging day?
A -
A nice hot shower, an episode of the office, and a warm cookie will typically do it for me!

Q - Who or what has had a big influence on your approach to your work?
A -
My ASL teachers at my ITP program. Incidentally, they were the first Deaf people I’d ever met way back when, and to this day they are my teachers and biggest inspiration to continue growing in this field.

Team Member Q&A

Q - What’s your favorite part of working at Carter Hears!?
A -
The supportive team! This is a very new experience for me, and everyone has been so kind and helpful. I can’t wait to meet everyone on the collaborative work day!

Q - What’s one fun fact about you that might surprise people?
A -
I have ten tattoos!

Q - If you weren’t working in the DHH field, what career could you see yourself in?
A -
If I weren’t working in the DHH field I would either be a therapist or a social worker.

Q - What’s something you’ve learned from a student or family that has stuck with you?
A -
During my time at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind, working with the high school girls, I got to plan field trips and teach independent living skills. I experienced firsthand that our Deaf students often do not get exposure to things that hearing children typically would. We went bowling one night, and I remember the majority of the students had never been bowling. Another time, we went to a coffee shop, and these students had never gotten the opportunity to order for themselves. I learned quickly that these students need two things: frequent opportunities to experience new things, and to advocate for themselves in the real world. I take this lesson into the classroom with me and attempt to give my students these opportunities.

Q - How do you recharge after a long or challenging day?
A -
I either watch reality tv or go to a local coffee shop and read!

Q - What’s one thing people might not realize about the work you do?
A -
Oftentimes, people do not realize the amount of emotional support we provide our students, as we are their safe space because we understand language deprivation and have knowledge of the Deaf experience.

Q - Who or what has had a big influence on your approach to your work?
A -
My professor from Converse University, Addie Watson.

Q - If you could give one piece of advice to someone new joining Carter Hears!, what would it be?
A -
If I could give one piece of advice to someone new joining the team, I would say utilize all of the resources and support that we are given!

Q - What’s something you're currently working on, personally or professionally, that excites you?
A -
This is not current, but this summer I will begin at Washington University in St. Louis on a  Master’s degree in Deaf Education.

Q - What does a perfect day off look like for you?
A -
A perfect day would look like spending time with my partner, getting coffee, reading, and going to a museum!
